Grape variety:  Chardonnay

Producer: Failla

Alcohol content: 13%

Origin: California, USA

Notes: Keefer Ranch fruit was whole-cluster pressed directly into concrete egg fermenters (25%) and French oak (1/3 new) for about 10 months of aging. Keefer Ranch is located in the headwaters of Green Valley Creek, with a gently-sloping, well-drained, south-facing exposure. Green Valley is one of the smallest appellations in Sonoma County, situated in the southwestern part of Russian River Valley. Defined by fog, Green Valley is the first place where the fog comes in and the last place where it burns off, making it the coolest, foggiest part of the Russian River Valley.

Critical acclaim

92 points Vinous

The 2013 Chardonnay Keefer Ranch is supple, immediate and quite forward. Peach, apricot, mint, honey and wild flowers jump from the glass in an up-front Chardonnay with plenty of Russian River generosity. The Keefer is a bit less complex than some of the other Chardonnays in the range, but it more than makes up for that with its considerable raciness and near term appeal. This is a fascinating set of wines from Failla and Ehren Jordan. With this many selections of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah, what comes across is an excellent representation of the year. The 2013 Chardonnays are fabulous, while the Pinots and Syrahs are more uneven in terms of quality. The best Pinots and Syrahs in the range offer gorgeous texture and fine overall balance, but some of the wines come across as a bit light and faded. I tasted the 2013 reds twice, with consistent results. Of course, the wines had been bottled for only a short time, so that could be a factor as well. Time will tell. (1/2015)
